What do our initials mean?

LPC- Licensed Professional Counselors are not students in school. They are highly trained post-graduate counselors. They have already completed two years of a rigorous masters degree program, in which they had to complete 700 hours of counseling experience (on average) before graduation. During this time, they received training on various counseling techniques, assessments, and diagnostic skills. After graduation, they then go on to complete their national licensing exam, which allows them to receive their LPC-Intern license from the state. This is when the period of clinical supervision begins. During the clinical supervision period, LPC-Interns complete an additional 3,000 hours of counseling work over a minimum of 18 months (much like a doctor going through residency) before receiving their unsupervised LPC license. Throughout these 3,000 hours, they are supervised either on or off site by a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor who has had a minimum of five-years post license experience and has also taken another rigorous 40-hour course in order to be certified to supervise. The LPC you see may discuss your case confidentially with their supervisor. When you are receiving treatment from an LPC you receive the benefit of not just your clinician’s knowledge, experience, and expertise, but also the knowledge, experience, and expertise of the intern’s supervisor as well, all at a reduced cost to you!
LMFT-Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, they work with couples and their children to find solutions to relationship problems. Like LPCs they are highly trained counselors who have completed the necessary hours of experience, years of schooling, and licensing exams. An LMFT meets with many married people and their families regularly, speaking with them to determine the cause of their issues and counseling them on treatment and coping mechanisms. When treating their patients, LMFTs are more likely to consider the social and relational situation affecting a mental health issue.
LMSW- Licensed Master Social Workers are highly-trained post-graduate counselors, who are currently under Clinical Supervision while working toward their independent licensure. Those holding this credential are licensed in Texas to provide Generalist and Clinical Social Work services. LMSWs have completed a Master's Degree in Social Work from an accredited university, have passed a state Board exam, along with completion of practice and supervision requirements to be licensed as a non-independent practitioner. LMSW holders are required to have ongoing training throughout the year to keep their license current. The LMSW you see may discuss your case confidentially with their Clinical Supervisor. In this case, you receive the benefit of not only your clinician's knowledge, experience, and expertise, but also that of their Clinical Supervisor.
LCSW- Licensed Clinical Social Workers, in addition to the Master's Degree, Board Certification, and experience of an LMSW, those holding these credentials have worked over 3,000 hours/3-5 years of direct Clinical experience and passed a National Exam by the American Board of Social Work. These Clinicians also have requirements of ongoing training to keep their license current. These clinicians are independently licensed, and are deemed to not need further outside supervision in order to provide Clinical services to clients.
LCSW-S- Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Supervisors are the highest level of Clinical Social Worker, one who is licensed to provide not only Clinical services to clients, but to supervise fellow therapists seeking independent licensure. In order to obtain these credentials, one must have held an LCSW for three years, attend a forty-hour training specifically addressing the ways to supervise others, and receive additional training throughout the year.
